Hearing Enhancement Systems
Induction Loops and Infra-red Systems
What is an infra-red system?
Infra-red systems use invisible infra-red light to carry sound to receivers worn by listeners.
The best known of these systems is Sennheiser. Sennheiser can be used in two different ways, without a hearing aid when the listener hears the sound that comes from the infra-red system through a headset and with a hearing aid when a receiver is worn around the neck and transmits a signal to the listener's hearing aid.
What is an induction loop?
An induction loop is a cable that encircles the audience area. This receives its signal by means of a direct connection from a sound system or other sound source. The resulting electric current in the loop produces a magnetic field which can then be picked up by anyone within the area of the loop if they switch their hearing aid - or loop listening aid - to the ‘T’ setting.
Listeners need to adjust their own hearing aids for volume.
The loop wire usually runs around the edges of the room so that it serves the entire audience area. Sometimes, however, it only circles a particular seating area.
