Late breaking news from the Edinburgh International Festival
Star soprano Gabriele Fontana has just announced that, as a gift to the Gürzenich Orchestra and to the Festival, she will perform with the orchestra in its Usher Hall concert on Friday 31 August.
In addition to playing The Countess in Cologne Opera’s new production of Capriccio at the Festival Theatre, she will also sing three songs by Richard Strauss all of which were first performed in 1900 by Strauss’s wife Pauline and the Gürzenich Orchestra and conducted by Richard Strauss himself.
The Gürzenich Orchestra came to prominence in the 19th century and leading conductors and composers, such as Berlioz, Wagner, Verdi, Brahms and Stravinsky have all put in regular appearances. The orchestra has premiered many important works such as Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel which is also in Friday’s programme.
