Blackbird wows West End
Wed 15 Feb 2006
One of the highlights of the Edinburgh International Festival 2005 has been brought back to life in London’s West End. David Harrower’s Blackbird, a new play commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival, opened on Monday at the Albery Theatre to further acclaim.
'…last night Blackbird knocked me for six all over again. This is an extraordinary, no-holds-barred drama that both chills and thrills…' The Daily Telegraph
Directed by German master Peter Stein, the production features stunning performances from two of the UK’s most revered actors. Jodhi May and Roger Allam reprise their roles as Una and Ray who, 15 years ago, had an illicit affair when she was just 12. Now 27, Una comes in search of Ray and uncompromisingly forces him to confront the past he’s been fighting to hide.
'…if the play sets you thinking, it’s because of performances packed with feeling: May, sexually alert and teasing behind the rancorous fury; Allam, hurt, indignant yet crumpled, bowed, as if transforming himself into a tortoise complete with shell. They’re both terrific.' The Times
Blackbird runs for a strictly limited season until 13 May 2006. Visit www.seeblackbird.com or phone 0870 950 0920 for tickets and further information.
'Not since Festen has the West End offered such a searing theatrical experience' The Guardian
Don’t miss one of the theatrical highlights of the year.
